Aerated & mixed
Aeration off for 10 seconds
Aeration off, but mixed
The photos above show mixed liquor (activated sludge) in three different states. The aeration
method at this plant was diffused, using rotary lobe compressors. The center photo shows
the tiny bubbles rising to the surface just after the blowers shut off. You can make out the
discrete particals (floc) in the righthand photo that are composed of single and multicell
microorganisms and other organic and inorganic materials clumped together and functioning
similar to an individual organism. Under magnification each clump is teeming with activity.

This plant had been operated very consistently with a target Food to Microorganism Ratio of
0.06 and exhibited what I call "textbook" characteristics, such as no foaming, a fairly low
Sludge Volume Index, and a very high quality denitrified effluent.
The treatment topics and photos presented on this
site are changed at about 6 week intervals so please
revisit if you're interested in wastewater treatment.
